You will hear people talking about their ISP (Internet Service Provider) or “provider”, they are talking about the company that is providing them with access to the internet.
Without an ISP you can have the best computer with a great router and still have no access to the internet. That is why you will need an ISP, to connect to the internet.
Think of you ISP as the great gateway to the internet and EVERYTHING online. As soon as they are finished setting up your connection, you will be able to send an email, do some online shopping or browse the web.
Every business or individual who has access to the internet will have an ISP. In South Africa we have a few ISPs to select from. Luckily, we don’t all need the same provider to be able to communicate with each other AND we don’t have to pay more money to connect to someone using a different ISP.
We can all have a website, but not all of us can be an ISP. It takes a lot of infrastructure that costs a lot of money and smart technicians to make an ISP work. ISP’s have to employ hundreds of people to maintain and upkeep their kilometers of cabling, to bring the internet to your home or business. In South Africa, we are lucky to have some great ISPs to choose from.
