What is a responsive website?

Responsive web design or RWD is a web design approach that makes all the pages of the website render well on more than one device and window or screen sizes from small to big display sizes.

An extension of RWD now also considers a viewer’s proximity as part of the viewing context. To ensure usability and satisfaction, content, design and performance are necessary across all devices.

If a website is designed with RWD in mind, it will automatically adapt it’s viewing and environment by using fluid, proportion-based grids, CSS3 and flexible images.

A developer will use percentages rather than points or pixels to determine the size of the webpage, image or video that will be displayed. It is also important for all the elements to be sized in relative units, to prevent them from displaying outside the element that contains the page.

For a site to be Responsive there are a few things that needs to work together, mostly media queries will allow the page to use different CSS style rules based on the device used to display the site on or the width of the surface of the device the site is being displayed on.

It does not matter if you are using a mobile device, a tablet, laptop or a desktop if your website is responsive the layout will automatically adjust and adapt to display your website on that device.

We all have a smart phone and most of us will, more often that not, use mobile devices to view websites. That is why it is very important for you to make sure that your website is responsive.
