I’m sure you’ve heard the word domain or domain name in conversations, maybe you’ve asked or wondered what they mean.
These two words often get used synonymously, but the word domain is specific to local networks. Whereas a domain name refers to an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. That’s quite a mouthful.
I am going to break it down and try to make it as simple as possible in this article.
A domain name is the name you will type in to the address bar or a browser to get to your / a website, in other word the website URL. Think of this as the address for your website on the world wide web.
The internet is one big network of computers that are connected to one another through a global network of connections. All of these computers have the ability to communicate with one another.
Each of these computers have a unique IP address assigned to them to identify a particular computer. This is like an ID number; each computer has a unique one.
An example of an IP address will be: 78.321.66.1
It will be very unpractical for you to give an IP address as your URL and so domains where invented to solve this problem.
